Pour commémorer le
1 000e anniversaire du plus influent des philosophes-scientifiques de l’islam, l’UNESCO a édité cette médaille commémorative en 1980. Abu Ali al-Husain Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sina était connu en Europe sous le nom d’Avicenne. Guérisseur et humaniste, Avicenne a développé une approche holistique exemplaire qui concentre l’essence de l’éthique scientifique. Il est devenu une source d’inspiration pour la promotion de ce sujet d’une importance capitale pour l’UNESCO.
Dessiné par le sculpteur et médailliste Victor Douek, l’avers dépeint une scène où Avicenne est entouré de ses disciples, inspirée d’une miniature provenant d’un manuscrit turc du XVIIe siècle. Au revers est reproduite en arabe et en latin une phrase d’Avicenne qui signifie « Coopérer pour le bien-être du corps et la survie de l’espèce humaine», ainsi que la signature attribuée au philosophe.
A l’initiative de la République islamique d’Iran, l’UNESCO a créé le Prix Avicenne d'éthique scientifique en 2002. Une médaille en or est décernée aux lauréats.

To mark the 1,000th birth anniversary of the most influential of Islam’s philosopher-scientists, UNESCO minted this commemorative medal in 1980. Abu Ali al-Husain Ibn Abdallah Ibn Sina was known in Europe as Avicenna.A healer and a humanist, Avicenna developed an exemplary holistic approach that captures the essence of ethics in science and has thus come to serve as a source of inspiration for the promotion of this concern, which is of central importance to UNESCO.
Designed by sculptor-medallist Victor Douek, the obverse depicts a scene showing Avicenna surrounded by his disciples, inspired by a miniature in a 17th-century Turkish manuscript. Reproduced on the reverse is a phrase by Avicenna in Arabic and Latin which means, “Cooperate for the well-being of the body and the survival of the human species” as well as the signature attributed to Avicenna.
